Capitalizing on a Van Gogh’s exhibition is, in a way, very easy: the fame of the painter and the popularity of his work are a great attraction for each and every showing which includes one of his paintings.
However, it is much more challenging to figure out a Van Gogh’s chronological exhibition without showing any of original work of the Dutch artist. This challenge was taken over by Van Gogh, My Dream Exhibition, which is open to public since 15th September 2012 in Amsterdam. A real innovative part of the retrospective is the 3D animation of seven of the artist’s masterpieces.
The paintings’ animation are deeply studied and weighted, since they are based on dynamic suggestion taken from the works and the letters of the painters. This synaesthetic fascination, achieved via the use of state of the art ICT technologies, add a great value to the whole exhibition’s project, adding a new dimension not only to the paintings, but to the visitors’ experience as a whole.
Since the particular technique used by Van Gogh in some of his most famous paintings, the colors have faded through the decades because of a synthetic paint he used. Using the state of the art researches and techniques, these colors have been digitally restored and the vibrant tones used by the Dutch painter brought them to life again.
Even without the original painting in front of the visitors, the exhibition shows better than before the way Van Gogh must have envisioned his painting.
As stated by one of the curator, “[the exhibition] allows visitors to focus on other things than the painting, price tag and grandiose frame. This creates room in the visitor experience for the story (or rather, stories) the exhibition tries to tell”.For more information, visit the exhibition's website
