In January 2013 the Cleveland Museum of Art opened Gallery One, an interactive gallery that blends art and technology allowing visitors to explore the museum’s collections.
This revolutionary gallery space, called Gallery One, features the largest multi-touch screen in the United States, which displays images of over 3,500 objects from the museum’s collection. This 12-meters screen allows visitors to shape their own tours of the museum and to discover it in an innovative way. In fact, visitors could tap and swipe a displayed image, store the artwork for future reference, and receive directions to its location in the museum.
Designed for visitors of all ages, these interfaces inspire visitors to see art with greater depth and understanding. Gallery One contains a series of dynamic interfaces tailored to enhance the experience of both individuals and groups.
This experience encompasses both the IT in culture and the personal dimension of the visiting. Not only: thanks to the iPad App paired with the launch of Gallery One.
The App ArtLens, gives a truly multidimensional perspective to visitors' experience in the museum. Using image recognition software, visitors can scan 2D objects and access from their tablet related multimedia content, including excerpts from the audio, video and other additional contextual information. Moreover, indoor location technology allows visitors to navigate the galleries and find works of art previously collected via the Gallery One multitouch.
“The Collection Wall powerfully demonstrates how cutting-edge technology can inspire our visitors to engage with our collection in playful and original ways never before seen on this scale,” said Jane Alexander, Director of Information Management and Technology Services. “This space, unique among art museums internationally, will help make the Cleveland Museum of Art a destination museum.”
