Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photo contest focused on the valorization of cultural heritage. Thanks to the participation of enthusiastic amateur photographers who want to contribute actively in heritage promotion, the contest aims to enrich the Wikipedia multimedia repository, called WikiCommons,
The contest is open to everyone: from people who wants to spread the knowledge of the local heritage to those who just want to share with the community a nice shoot of a monument taken during the summer holidays. Everybody has now the possibility to contribute effectively to the WikiCommons project and thus enrich Wikipedia’s resources by participating in this competition.
Municipalities, organizations and associations from more than 30 countries worldwide joined the project this year, giving the chance to millions of people to join this participative and transnational cultural heritage valorization project.
It doesn’t matter if you are about to leave for your holidays or if you’re going to spend the whole summer at work: thousands of spots are globally-wide still to be covered. And if a cultural heritage is not listed on the contest’s website, you can address local authorities to join the Wiki Loves Monument project, allowing thus citizens to photograph them and releasing the pictures under the CC-BY-SA license.
The 2011’s Wiki Loves Monuments contest witnessed the submission of more than 168.000 pictures coming from eighteen countries, while the 2012’s contest is expected to reach far more great numbers.
In every participating country you can win awards, and the best photo in each country will be forwarded to the international jury – which will select the best monument photos in 2012.
